Saint-Romain 2011, Taupenot-Merme

Nestled in the heart of Morey-Saint-Denis, the Domaine Taupenot-Merme produces an interesting selection of Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune wines. This was the first visit of the Bourgoblog team to the domaine and we were impressed by the warm welcome and deep technical knowledge of the owner and wine-maker Romain Taupenot. The domaine is managed on organic principles but is not certified (few organic (bio) Burgundy domaines bother with certification in part due to the cost). This red Saint-Romain has a beautiful cherry nose, it is intense and hedonistic. There is marzipan, plum, blue berry, anise. Good fruit on the palate, structure, continues on cherry fruit. This is a potent wine and is consistent from nostril to taste bud. Ranks as one of the most luxurious Saint-Romain on a par with the likes of Alain Gras and scores 27-28/30 for a Saint-Romain.
