Bonnes Mares Grand Cru 2000, Domaine de la Vougeraie

The fifth wine in a flight of six tasted at Bourgoblog HQ in Puligny, I bought this bottle from Domaine de la Vougeraie several years ago and was excited to break it out to share with a handful of Burgundy cognoscenti. Illustrating the age of the vines and the low yields of this Bonnes Mares, the colour is very dark with thick slow-draining legs. First nose is dominated by cassis, blackberry, open. This evolves to even darker aromas of medjool date, fig and even olives. Surprising for a 2000 which was only a moderately ripe vintage. The nose is so big and heavy your nostrils can chew it. This Bonnes Mares comes into its own on the palate with rich blackberry and cassis flavours oozing with quality. Excellent structure with a phenomenal breadth of fruit. Scores 27/30 for a Bonnes Mares.
